Description

Southwest Reef Lighthouse was built in 1856 to serve as a substitute for the present Atchafalaya Bay light-ship, and also for the light-house at Point de Fer.

The lighthouse was removed from its pilings in 1987 and moved to the town of Berwick.

Today, the tower stands on the western bank of the Atchafalaya River in Berwick in Everett S. Berry Lighthouse Park, named for the mayor during the relocation of the lighthouse.

We will definitely be doing a future blog post on this one.  Such an interesting history!
